The future for spark plugs?

Researchers at Japan's National Institutes of Natural Sciences have developed a laser igniter which could replace the spark plug in internal combustion engines. These could result in cleaner and more efficient engines.

Laser igniters are capable of burning leaner fuel mixtures thus reducing the amount of Nitrous Oxides produced in combustion.

Also, traditional plugs tend to just ignite the air-fuel mixture close to them. The cold cylinder walls tend to absorb heat, quenching the flame before it expands. Laser igniters can ignite the mixture through the length of the cylinder.
